I remember when I first bought this book and what drew me in was the name of the book and nothing else. I was at the airport with my parents at the age of 15 waiting for someone to take me to my flight. We walked into the WhSmiths and I picked up the book not knowing anything about it with no expectations besides the fact that it had a cool cover and a cool name and my parents bought it for me… oh, the days when my parents use to buy me books!!! I got on the plane for my four-hour flight and next thing you know I was addicted to this book. And I finished it within the first two days of my holiday! It blew my expectations out of the water.
This was a re-read for me, but it had been such a long time since I had originally read it and by the time I got the second book I had no interest in completing the series… Then the film came out the books got crazy hype and it put me off even more with the thought of what if I don’t like the books, so I put it off some more and then the show came out and I decided enough was enough I want to read these goddamn books. So, I have started!

I found that I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought and I am not 100% sure why! I can see how the book differs from the show and the film. I have to say that I massively enjoy the book more than the show or the movie… they are great but nothing really beats the book!

I enjoyed the story and how it worked it’s way out. It was filled with action, comedy and mystery. I love the shadowhunter world and there is a good pace to the book most of the time. I found it hard to concentrate on the some of the info dumps… I know that it helped to shape the world and grow the readers understanding, but it was hard to focus and continue reading. When reading this book there was something that nagged me and I couldn’t put my finger on it until I started to watch Supernatural again! Although they are not the same (I know they aren’t the same before people start commenting) it’s just a little nagging in the back of my head and in my gut… I guess it is the whole “family business” of it all!

I loved the characters! I loved Jace’s quick wit, I love Magnus Banes and his eccentric ways, I will always have a love for Alec and Izzy that I will never be able to define… their relationship reminds me of mine and my brother, not always agreeing with one another’s actions or decisions in life! I do have a fondness for both Clary and Simon, but at times I found them both to be irritating and hard to connect with. However, that may change as I carry on with the series.

But, overall I highly enjoyed the read and thought it was a great start to the series. I would definitely recommend it!
